Ian Urbina of the New York Times’ article “Think Those Chemicals Have Been Tested?” addresses the issue of harmful untested industrial chemicals in the environment and the problematic leniency of the Toxic Substances Control Act. Urbina draws our attention to the disturbing reality that the majority of chemicals in use today have never been independently tested for safety. I found this article especially interesting in relation to our class, since he draws a connection to the 2010 BP Gulf oil spill, and the use of untested, questionable chemicals in the cleanup efforts. The problem with the presumption that chemicals are safe until proven dangerous is that exposed populations are unknowingly victimized in the process. A very interesting question of responsibility and morality.
